Highway Historic Route 66

Built in 1910 the McKinley Bridge is named for Congressman William B. McKinley who was also the president of the Interurban Railroad Company that built the bridge. A few years after opening, the railroad was modified to carry both trains and automobiles. From 1926 to 1928 it served as the primary Mississippi River crossing for Route 66. From 1928 to 1937 it served as an optional route for the highway. After renovation the bridge reopened in 2007 and is now also a pedestrian and bicycle bridge.
