In 1937 Edward Shirk became the manager of Carmel Crisp, a confectionary store that specialized in glazed peanuts. He changed the name to Beer Nuts in 1953 and began selling the packaged nuts through the National Liquor Store in Bloomington. The current facility that opened in 1973 includes a popular store that sells the trademark nuts as well as souvenirs.
